Thundra: Serverless Observability for AWS Lambda

The black box nature of AWS Lambda and other serverless environments means that identifying and fixing performance issues is difficult and time-consuming. Built for straightforward debugging, monitoring, and observability, Thundra provides deep insight into your entire serverless environment. Thundra collects and correlates all your metrics, logs, and traces, allowing you to quickly identify problematic invocations and also analyzes external services associated with that function. With Thundra’s zero overhead and automated instrumentation capabilities, your developers are free to write code without worrying about bulking up their Lambdas or wasting time on chasing black box problems.

Trace Charts with Thundra Monitoring Data on Honeycomb

With Honeycomb, you can analyze and visualize your serverless data produced by Thundra in your Honeycomb account for insight into the health of your serverless environment.

After Thundra data is being sent to your Honeycomb application, you can then parse and visualization the data. To visualize traces in Honeycomb, write a simple query. For example, try creating a query to break down applicationName by SUM(duration) on span dataset.

This query creates the chart shown below, showing the duration for the function per applicationName. As you can see below, a small circle appears when your pointer is on a data point. When you find a trace you’d like to explore in more detail, click to display its trace diagram.

Alternatively, you may also add a second break down - traceId - to your query. Now, you are breaking down your data by both traceId and applicationName. Click on a traceId in the results table to see its trace diagram.

The Thundra Integrator for Honeycomb also enhances these metrics with additional trace information. When you click on spans, additional span information will show up on the right side of screen.
